About the Department of Visual Arts
Welcome Message from Department Chair
The Department of Art at Northern Kentucky University offers a unique and challenging opportunity for aspiring artists, designers and art educators who seek professional training in the visual arts. All programs of study share a fundamental commitment to the premise that for the next generation of creative artists and educators to face the challenges of the 21st century they must be equipped with the creative and intellectual tools to succeed. To this end, the faculty and staff of the Department of Art embrace a comprehensive approach of general education, training in critical thinking skills related to the various visual arts disciplines, and studio training.
We are prepared to assist students in making informed decisions about their majors, career plans and other concerns that develop during their undergraduate years. Students pursuing a career in fine arts can select an area of study from Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics and Photography. Students interested in the field of design can consider Graphic Design as a major. For those students interested in the rich history and contemporary trends in the visual arts, the Department of Art offers a major in Art History. Students interested in teaching art as a vocation can choose a major in Art Education that will prepare them for teaching at the kindergarten, primary and secondary school levels.
Our faculty is comprised of professional artists, designers, art historians and art educators who are committed to the teaching mission of NKU. They bring their creative and scholarly interests to the classroom and studio in ways that provide exciting and thought provoking ideas that both inform and challenge. I invite you to consider the opportunities for study in the visual arts at NKU as you browse our website
